Educating the "green" workforce
Hi everyone,
I wanted to introduce myself as the new director of the Student Sustainability Center (SSC). For those of you who might not know, the SSC is a new office through the School of Global Environmental Sustainability. I hope it will become a center of student activity surrounding sustainability that will help focus students’ curriculum, research, and environmental initiatives. I recognize that local environmental issues at our university are linked to global challenges from climate change to biodiversity loss to food shortages and poverty and inequality around the world.
A little about myself. I am an anthropology undergraduate with a focus in cultural anthropology. I am most interested in studying human-environment interactions; in other words, looking at why people make the choices they do regarding natural resources and the environmental and cultural impacts of those choices.
Outside of my studies, I have been involved in environmental and other activism long before I came to Colorado State. I helped start a recycling program in my hometown’s school system, and have completed sustainability assessment for homeowners and a small business. I have always been interested in encouraging people to reassess how they interact with others and the world.
I firmly believe that the Student Sustainability Center must be a student-led initiative, which means that with your help, we can accomplish great things for the University, the larger Fort Collins community, and for ourselves. We can undertake a school-wide environmental impact assessment to develop a set of student sustainability indicators—how sustainable are we currently? We can then create an ecological mission statement and begin to implement and strengthen environmental initiatives. Let’s truly green our college, with this and many other initiatives.
Thanks so much! I look forward to working with you all soon.
